It is not about getting them to understand, it is more about having them do something they may not want to do.
I have a super cute but old dog name Zeus and a fat cute cat name Nala. They are pretty smart but stubborn and know what they want and like.
Sometimes I swear they understand me, they look straight at me and then go for what I say, if it is appealing to them. Sometimes they even talk back. Especially our cat Nala. She is very vocal, and I swear I can understand her sometimes when she says yes or no with her meow! It is quite amazing; she definitely lets us know how she is feeling. I truly am grateful and thankful for such amazing pets and people in my life, especially my amazing husband. He has helped me show love to our pets and have them love us back. I wish for everyone to do something that they truly love, that helps them show love and appretiation to the people, pets, animals and creatures around them.
